Hewitt is goal hero as City edge thriller

-

BANGOR City proved they fight right until the end in Saturday’s thrilling 3-2 win at Aberystwyth Town, where Steven Hewitt fired in a stunning winner in added time.

The Citizens claimed all three points at the expense of former boss Nev Powell, and were looking to take their form into last night’s rescheduled league clash against Connah’s Quay at Nantporth.

The first half at Park Avenue produced no goals but the second half proved the opposite.

Bangor looked a class apart in the early stages, Brayden Shaw going close to connecting with a dangerous Hewitt cross from the right.

Dean Rittenberg skillfully set himself up for a shot in the box, but a Jonny Spittle block denied him and the ball flew over.

Bottom-of-the-table Aber grew in confidence, and a deflected shot from ex-City defender Declan Walker had to be grasped at the second attempt by Connor Roberts.

The second half started well for the home team with Kellaway and Ryan Wade both having shots blocked inside the box.

On 62 minutes Aber’s Ryan Wollacott sent over a cracking cross from the left and Luke Borrelli volleyed home. Bangor then made a change, bringing on ex-Blackpool striker Gary Taylor-Fletcher for Nardiello.

And what an inspired substitution it proved to be. Tom Kennedy lifted a brilliant ball into the box, and a minute after coming on, assistant player-manager Taylor Fletcher controlled and blasted home a fierce near-post shot to make it one apiece.

Aber came back, Joe Phillips denied by a fine stop from goalkeeper Roberts, then an amazing tackle from Hewitt prevented a certain goal for Matthew Jones.

Then came the late drama. In the 89th minute Luke Wall delivered deep from the left and Shaw headed in off the post to give Bangor the lead.

Aber refused to give in and in the 90th minute great work on the right by Borrelli enabled sub Craig Hobson to tap in to make it 2-2. Then, in the 93rd minute a Rittenberg cross was headed out to Hewitt, who fired home a left-foot piledriver from 20 yards.
