BRO GORONWY took advantage of Nefyn United’s postponement to move clear on their own at the top of the Gwynedd League, but they left it late to see off Waunfawr.

Victory in Caernarfon, coupled with Nefyn’s game at home with Beaumaris being postponed, saw the islanders move three points clear at the top of the standings after nine games.

With no game the week before, Bro Goronwy were looking to pick up the momentum gained after travelling to previously unbeaten league leaders Bontnewydd and coming away with a fine victory.

A tough test awaited at Waunfawr, a team that Bro have always had close competitive matches against. The Beganif’s game plan did not change, getting the numbers behind the ball to hopefully frustrate the visitors and settle for a single point if needed.

Last Tuesday night was great as well, a good attacking performance that could have easily led to a more convincing victory. There we were, top of the league! Then last Saturday saw reality intervene on our early daydreams about Champions League football.

Debutant Carwyn Williams was impressive out wide for Bro, strong on wasn’t the most astute move. Having said that we’re still up there, let’s hope we can keep going on Saturday.

There was free entry to last Tuesday evening’s match. When we suffered the abandoned match in Deeside a few years ago the Nomads offered free entry for the re-arranged match so it’s nice to return the favour.

With Waunfawr content with slowing the game down and also trying to run the clock down to bag themselves a point, Bro pressed for the maximum points but kept wasting gilt-edged opportunities, Williams seeming to blaze strikes over the crossbar instead of troubling the glovesman.

With the hosts ready to celebrate a point they were hit with two late sucker punches as eventually Bro produced enough for the win, even though it took until the last closing minute of the match.

Andy Williams persistence paying off as his left footed shot from a tight angle put Bro ahead in the 90th minute followed by younger cousin Owain Griffiths rubbing salt in the wounds with a cool side-footed place around the goalkeeper in stoppage-time to give a 3-1 win to the islanders.
