Wheels for Wales
A BOY’S patriotic design was showcased to the world this weekend as it took centre stage at the Wales Rally GB event.
Rheinallt Jones of Bodffordd on Anglesey, won a recent competition run by Toyota and the Welsh Government to design a rally car, which has now been kitted out to the 12 year old’s exact vision.
The vehicle arrived on the schoolyard of Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni last Tuesday morning, much to the delight of his classmates.
The ‘Design a Rally Car Livery’ competition had been open to all Welsh schools, with many hundreds of entries having been sent in from Holyhead to Chepstow.
But it was Rheinallt’s Welsh dragon design that impressed the judges the most, taking pride of place at the Rally Village in Deeside during the duration of the event.
Despite being born on Anglesey, Rheinallt only returned to the island a little over two years ago, having lived in Saudi Arabia since he was seven.
But the youngster, who said that he couldn’t believe it when he was told of his success a few weeks ago, admitted that it didn’t take long to draw up his plans.
“Our technology teacher, Miss Gwenno Williams, told us about the competition and recommended that I should take part,” he said.
“I didn’t take me long to think of the design as I thought that a Welsh dragon would be very appropriate and show our pride in hosting the event. “But I never expected to win!” His headteacher, Mr Clive Thomas, said the entire school was proud of Rheinallt’s success.
“We’re very proud of his success, which will now be showcased to many thousands of people of course.
“As a school, we’re very pleased to promote the STEM subjects, which can prove so valuable.
“Rheinallt’s achievement is not only a great success for himself but for the whole school and Anglesey.”
