TWO ADMIT CAUSING DEATH OF CYCLIST
TWO men have admitted causing the death of a 70-year-old cyclist by careless driving.
Kevin Graham Woods and Tomos Rhys Wheldon Williams had previously denied causing the death of Robert Idris Llewelyn by dangerous driving following a collision at Trefor, near Bodedern, Anglesey.
Williams, 32, was driving a Ford Transit and Woods, 62, a Skoda Octavia when tragedy struck on April 5 last year.
But they pleaded guilty to alternative careless driving charges when they appeared at Mold Crown Court yesterday.
Sion ap Mihangel, prosecuting, said the proposals from the defence had been considered in advance and the family of the deceased had been consulted.
Duncan Bould, defending Woods, of Glan yr Afon, Llanrhwydrus, near Cemaes, and Jonathan Austin for Williams, of Tyddyn Leci, Llanfwrog, near Holyhead, both applied for presentence reports.
Judge Rhys Rowlands bailed both men pending sentence on November 30 at Caernarfon Crown Court.
He told them: “The two of you have now pleaded guilty to the offence of causing the death of Mr Llewelyn by driving in a careless way. That plainly is not as serious an offence as was originally alleged against you.
“Nevertheless, it remains a serious matter and you should be prepared for all eventualities when you return for sentence.”
They were both given an interim driving ban.
Mr Llewelyn, who lived in the Rhoscolyn area, was pronounced dead at the scene on the B5109 soon after the crash at around 7.30am.
In a tribute released at the time, Mr Llewelyn’s family said: “We are devastated by the loss of Bob – a much loved father, grandfather and husband.
“He was full of life and a real character, courageous and funny and stubborn too. He was an inspiration to many people, spending his 70th birthday cycling up Sa Calobra with Owain, his son. He will be missed by us all.”
