Bowling league sets ball rolling on campaign to find new arrivals

-

RENEWED efforts will be made by local bowls enthusiasts in the coming weeks and months to attract new teams to boost the membership of the under-strength Anglesey/ Bangor and District League’s Wednesday Division.

During the 2017 season, just seven teams were involved, posing obvious problems.

The decision on the 2018 line-up will be made at the league’s annual general meeting, to be arranged on a date in January.

Meanwhile, a league members’ meeting, hosted at the Bethesda club’s Rachub headquarters, conducted a review of the season that ended recently and came up with proposals for the AGM.

One of the major topics was the Wednesday Division’s numerical weakness and, in that context, Criccieth indicated they intended to apply to join but Caernarfon, the bottom side last term, are expected to drop out.

Hints were made by Menai Bridge that they were considering applying and existing members Bethesda are thinking of entering a second team.

Beaumaris A were the Wednesday Division champions last season, with Benllech as runners-up.

Llangefni retained the 10-team Monday Division title, with Beaumaris in second place.

Changes are mooted for the league President’s Day singles’ competition, to give the event an early season date, rather than late on, to improve its significance, and a combined league singles’ championship is also being advocated, instead of separate events for the Monday and Wednesday Divisions.

Arrangements for the Eric Whitworth Cup and Festival Cup, the Monday and Wednesday Division knockouts, are likely to be altered.

The individual bowlers with the best aggregate records for 2017 were presented with their awards:

Monday Division’s best senior, Kevin Fallowes (Beaumaris) and best junior, Finlay Prydderch (Caernarfon); the Wednesday Division corresponding winners, Tim Williams (Beaumaris A) and Hannah Jones-Williams (Caernarfon).
