Menai magic brings a flurry of tries in win

-

NINE tries from hosts Menai Bridge secured a 55-0 home thrashing of Anglesey rivals Benllech in Division Three North.

Benllech struggled to cope with the pace of the home side’s game. Bridge used their forwards effectively, their direct running causing real problems in the opposition defence.

The forwards’ hard work laid the foundation for Bridge’s backs to cut loose. Winger Dan Hughes bagged a pair of tries as did full-back Pat Roberts.

The fourth try and bonus point was secured in the first 20 minutes. A dominant home scrum also secured a penalty try when Benllech infringed as their pack was shunted backwards over their try-line.

To their credit Benllech rallied in the second half and enjoyed long periods of possession, but were unable to breach the home defence. Bridge kept asking questions and scrum-half Darren Jones’ typical sniping run opened up the field for a fine try. The final try of the match was reward for the forwards graft as Gerwyn Morris bulldozed his way to the line. Other home tries came from Dion McGrath and Gareth Parry. Bridge will hope to maintain their momentum as they welcome Flint this Saturday. An early kick off is scheduled ahead of the Wales v Georgia match. Benllech will entertain Mold 2nds. Division Three North leaders Holyhead’s scheduled game at Flint was called off. As a result, the Holy Islanders were knocked off the top by Nant Conwy 2nds, who overcame Pwllheli 2nds. Nant now lead the table by two points, having played the same number of games as Holyhead. This Saturday sees Caergybi visit Pwllheli 2nds in a third versus second clash at Parc Bodegroes.
