FLASH FLOOD

Main river bursts banks

-

BUSINESSES, which were damaged by flood water when a river burst its banks flooding a market town, are still battling to reopen.

Llangefni was engulfed when up to 5ft of storm water up to 5ft deep swept through the town as the River Cefni burst its banks last Wednesday night, November 22.

Natural Resources Wales will investigate why the town was flooded to such an extent.

The island’s MP, Albert Owen, visited some of the affected businesses on Monday, making calls for a multi-agency approach to stop similar floods from devastating the town in future.

“Its devastating for the businesses that have been impacted, but flooding in general is happening on a more regular basis,” he said.

“The main post office, an essential local service, is among those that have been affected.

“We need better maintenance and resources as these busi- nesses deserve this.”

The island’s Assembly Member, Rhun ap Iorwerth, added: “Its heartbreaking for the businesses and homes that have been affected.

“I’ll see if there’s investment from the Welsh Government and if there’s anything the local authority can do, such as cleaning and checking drains, going forward.”

An Anglesey Council spokesman confirmed that as the Cefni was a ‘main river’, Natural Resources Wales are responsible for any maintenance.

The government body has confirmed it will carry out an investigation into the cause of the flooding before releasing a report.

Flood risk manager Keith Ivens said: “Once our investigations are complete we will publish a flood report, which will help determine whether there is anything that can be done in future to reduce flood risk for Llangefni.”
