Cefni come from behind to seal win

-

LLANGEFNI Rugby Club edged up to fourth in Division One North after a 21-11 home triumph against Bethesda.

Greg Horsman put Cefni in front from a penalty before Elis Ogwen Jones raced over for a Pesda try.

Matt Parry then stroked over a penalty for the visitors.

Horsman kicked three points, but a second Parry penalty, after a pair of previous missed attempts, handed Bethesda an 11-6 interval lead.

Llangefni’s second-half showing was much improved. Second row Dion Oliver was now making regular 10-metre gains, the home backs had more time and space to move the ball wide and they won many turnovers at the breakdown.

However, it took quite some time before Cefni found the cool precision needed to finish off their moves.

A big chance was missed after both Oliver and Will Bown had been stopped a metre short, as the home halves failed to see the Pesda left flank was undefended. The Anglesey men were awarded a penalty, but Horsman pulled it wide, and the Howgets were off the hook.

Pesda then had a period of pressure near the home 22, but good defence and some wayward passing allowed Cefni to break upfield. After winning their lineout ball about 10 metres out, the pack drove linewards.

This time they kept their composure and Declan Griffiths grounded under a heap of bodies. Horsman’s kick made it 13-11, and he added a penalty before Richard Foulkes engineered a clever inside pass to sub Iwan Humphreys, who did well to squirm over at the flag for a try to seal the win.

Cefni travel to Caernarfon this Saturday, while Pesda will enjoy home advantage over Bro Ffestiniog.
