Treble as Bro go top

- Dave Jones

TAYLOR JONES grabbed a hat-trick for a Bro Goronwy side which went top of the Gwynedd League with a 5-1 home beating of Waunfawr.

A late reversal of the cup fixture between the sides into a league encounter meant Bro’s home ground was used to ensure the match went ahead and Lee Potter’s side produced the goods.

Both teams contrived early misses, Shaun Roberts inches away from giving the visitors the lead and Taylor Jones narrowly failing to connect for the hosts.

Waunfawr applied all the pressure but could not find the breakthrough, Roberts catching centre-half Sam Regan dithering only for Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes to tip his shot onto the crossbar.

Bro settled and started to threaten themselves, Connor Jones’ edge of the box strike spilled by stopper Gerallt Bracegirdle, but the youngster looked lively to set up his older brother for the opener after 32 minutes.

Producing a box of tricks to find space close to the by-line Jones junior pulled the ball back at the near post for the senior Taylor Jones to smash home for 1-0.

That was the only goal of the first half and the interval brought fresh life into the Caernarfon outfit, who soon levelled the match.

Meurig Parry pounced to win the ball back before sending his soaring shot up and over to deceive keeper Sweetser-Bro Hawkes for 1-1.

Andy Williams’ determination brought Bracegirdle into action once again and then created the chance for the hosts to regain the lead.

Keeping close control of the ball under some pressure inside the penalty box forced a defender to hack wildly and bring the striker down.

Taylor Jones kept his cool to slot the ball into the net from the spot, albeit via the agonising fingertips of the unlucky glovesman.

Minutes later Taylor Jones completed his hat-trick, being in the right place at the right time to finish off Williams run and watch the ball slowly crawl over the goal line for 3-1.

Parry headed over in the away side’s final chance before Bro ran away with the game, scoring two goals in the final 15 minutes.

Taylor Jones’ front post header allowed Williams to finish from almost on the goal-line and then Dan Fairhead showed non-stop running to roll the ball across the face of goal, leaving Carwyn Williams to bury his chance at the far post.

Bontnewydd thrashed Beaumaris Town 4-0, while Iwan Roberts scored the only goal as Nefyn United edged past Menai Bridge Tigers 1-0.
