Crunch time for Llangefni

Title showdown followed by Trophy quarter-final

-

LLANGEFNI Town face two huge matches over the next four days which could have a major impact on their season.

Tonight (Wednesday) a massive six-pointer is on the agenda when Cefni visit Welsh Alliance League Division One leaders Conwy Borough (7.30pm).

Boro top the table by seven points but second-place Llangefni have two games in hand on their rivals from Y Morfa.

A win for Chris Roberts’ side this evening would really crank up the pressure on Conwy, but the Tangerines are going for a double over their Anglesey opponents having triumphed 2-1 at LÔn Talwrn back in October.

After tonight’s test, Cefni have another big task on their hands this Saturday when they travel to South Wales for an FAW Trophy quarter-final tie against giant-killers Penydarren BGC.

Unbeaten in all competitions this season, the Merthyr Tydfilbased hosts play in the tier-five South Wales Alliance Premier Division, yet as well as making the last eight of the Trophy, Penydarren have also reached the same stage of the Welsh Cup, where they journey to eight-time winners Bangor City next month.

Llangefni will have their work cut out to make the semis, but the islanders are experienced heads in this competition having been the only Anglesey side to win the national FAW Trophy back in 1991/92 when it was known as the Welsh Intermediate Cup.

Town are certainly entering this evening’s crunch clash in fine goalscoring form, having dumped Meliden out of the Mawddach Challenge Cup 11-0 at Lon Talwrn last Saturday.

The Welsh Alliance Division Two visitors were out of their depth as Cefni ran riot.

Craig Roberts celebrated a hat-trick, Iwan Jones and Harry Galeotti bagged a brace each and singles were hit by Cai Powell-Roberts, Osian Jones, Jack Williams and James Saxon.

It was the most comfortable of wins for Cefni on a very heavy pitch and on a more footballfriendly surface the margin of victory could have been even greater.

Llangefni have strengthened their ranks by signing goal-getting midfielder Bryn Roberts from fellow Division One club Trearddur Bay United.

Manager Chris Roberts is delighted to bring his namesake to Llangefni and said: ‘’I certainly think he can add something to the squad and help us push for promotion.’’
