A FORMER patient who was admitted to Ysbyty Gwynedd with a serious back injury has praised staff for their ‘outstanding care’ during a challenging time for the hospital.

Retired Wing Commander Simon Ling, from Dorset, was admitted to Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Emergency Department on New Year’s Day after suffering an acute lower back injury during his holiday in Snowdonia.

Mr Ling spent nine days on Conwy Ward and describes the staff that cared for him, on the ward and Emergency Department, as ‘heroes’.

He said: “My experience on Conwy Ward was as humbling as it was impressive.

“This was the first time I have been hospitalised and my condition dictated a need for complete care from my bed, be that eating, going to the toilet, rehab and assessment.

“Whilst it was clear the hospital was working to capacity, this pressure was never transferred, nor did it compromise the care.

“I was hugely grateful for the excellent care I received and the kindness shown by some of the nursing staff was beyond the call of duty.

“I cannot praise enough the work of f all the nursing, caring and physio team, they truly are heroes.”

Since leaving Ysbyty Gwynedd Simon has been recovering well, he is now walking again and undergoing physiotherapy.

He plans to return to Conwy Ward to thank staff personally for the care they provided and is also intending to hold a fundraising event later this year to raise funds towards the ward.
