Bangor back in action – and back to losing ways
A 36-19 home defeat to Wrexham sent Bangor Rugby Club tumbling to a third straight loss and down to eighth in WRU Division Two North.
The league battle recommenced after a long break for the 6 Nations and the weather, but the Citizens failed to produce any giantkilling form.
They were in contention until the final period of the game, but in the end perished to Wrexham’s heavier pack that wrecked Bangor’s scrums and line-outs.
Wrexham took the lead when a failed touch kick from the hosts was gathered and a burst of speed across the field put centre Nick Dodd in at the corner, James Price adding the conversion.
Bangor got on top for a period and their lively backs put centre Gwyn Roberts in for an unconverted try.
Wrexham struck back out of the blue when they pushed for the line from a five-metre scrum. Without prior warning the referee awarded them a seven-point penalty try.
Bangor looked to be getting on top in the second half and they charged down a touch kick from a scrum. Calvin Williams gathered and handed on to Tom Belt for a try converted by fly-half Nick Dundee.
With the gap down to two points the home team were looking good but the visitors struck back with a pressure try from Dodd again.
Bangor went back on the attack and were given a penalty. Wing forward Declan Jones took a quick tap and dived over near the posts, Dundee’s conversion levelled the score at 17-17.
After that it was all downhill for the Citizens when Dodd sold them a dummy pass and touched down for his hat-trick.
The scoreline was extended quickly in the final minutes when Wrexham went over from a five-metre scrum thanks to back row forward John Gill and then quickly grabbed another, Price being the scorer.
Bangor Youth beat Ruthin Youth 12-10, winning via a conversion from the last kick of the game, tries provided by Alex Burgess and Tom Brown.
