Celts break new ground on Euro trip
JUNIOR ballers from across Anglesey will be taking their talents to the continent next month as Ynys Môn Celts Under-12s become the first Welsh side to compete at the FIBA European Minibasketball Championship.
After a fantastic run of success, the North Wales Basketball Association Champions and leaders of this season’s standings were delighted to receive an invitation to the prestigious tournament.
The competition will see them taking on sides from Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Italy, France, Holland and hosts Belgium.
Celts head coach Jamie Thomas said: “Since this new club was founded under the leadership of Sion Parry three years ago, the Celts have been all about encouraging the development of young basketball players and providing the best possible experiences for local youngsters to come together, make new friends, and enjoy what is a fantastic and inclusive sport.
“Myself and the club’s committee have taken over this year as Sion has moved on to a new opportunity in China, and we’re very pleased with how the club has progressed.”
He added: “The kids have continued to develop at a staggering rate, we have more players training with us than ever before, and now we’ve been offered this incredible opportunity.”
Holyhead and District Round Table have sponsored a new kit for the squad to use at the European Championships in Brussels.
The tournament takes place from May 19-21.
