This is an even bigger joke than misspelling

-

COUNCIL staff attempted a crude cover up after misspelling the name of a town on a road sign.

After it was pointed out that the sign for Llannerchymedd had been misspelled as ‘Llanechymedd’, they decided to literally gloss over the issue.

The decision to daub over the top of the error has angered locals.

Tony Owen, who is from Llannerchymedd but who lives near Amlwch, said: “That sign (on the B511) had been there for some time and was becoming something of a joke. Now that the council have painted over it it’s become an even bigger joke. I heard one suggestion that it’s become a ghost sign.

“Could the council not have corrected it properly?”

Andrew Lawson, who has a holiday caravan in nearby Llaneilian, said: “It’s only a minor junction but it links the road to Llannerchymedd from the main A5025 and is well used by people going to Parys Mountain. The fact it’s been misspelled for so long is wrong.”

An Anglesey Council spokeswoman said the sign had been painted over after the misspelling was pointed out.

“We are arranging for the sign to be corrected and will be changed as soon as possible.”

The spelling of the village has been the subject of debate in the past, with some claiming the use of two Ns is incorrect.

Llan in Welsh means church, and there are more than 50 towns and villages on Anglesey prefixed with the word. Llannerch means “clearing” and medd means “mead”, the alcoholic drink made from honey.

In the 1960s council officials used the former spelling, “Llanerchymedd”, on road signs, maps and other documents.

But language purists claim the name has two Ns, which is now generally accepted as the correct spelling.
