Cefni 2nds score half century to win league
LLANGEFNI secured the North Wales Rugby Union 2nds League title with a convincing 50-12 triumph at Wrexham 2nds.
It was not such a good afternoon for Cefni’s first team, who were turned over 46-20 at home to Mold in Division One North.
Bethesda’s encouraging run of form came to an end as they crashed 29-7 to a Llandudno outfit which made it 10 straight league wins.
Tudno dominated the first half, Ryan Pike crossing for two tries and Jack Hughes also going over. Pike added a single conversion, but the hosts suffered a blow when former RGC forward Kelvin Davies was red-carded.
Early in the second half, Lloyd Evans produced a cracking break for the home side, enabling Bobby Davies to touch down.
Jonathan Stokes added a fifth try, Pike boosting with the boot.
The visitors had the final say when Gethin Long dotted down and converted his own try.
Menai Bridge were defeated 36-22 at Flint in Division Three North.
Despite early Bridge pressure, Flint pounced on a loose ball in the 22 and James Bedford raced away for the opening try.
The hosts then turned the screw and enjoyed a 15-minute purple patch, racing to a 19-0 lead with Jack Evans and Ryan Tyrone both scoring tries.
Shell-shocked Menai finally got their passing game going and skipper Ollie O’Brien rounded off a fine passage of support play for their opening try.
Shortly afterwards Dave Williams was put in space by No8 Chris Roberts and grounded for a fine try. The half time situation was 19-14 and the crowd sensed that the first score in the second half would probably determine the winner.
Flint scored that try through Sam Parry, which brought up their bonus point. A second Bedford touchdown stretched the lead.
Bridge then gained territory and were rewarded with a penalty. However, the home pressure was relentless and despite Bridge defending for 17 phases, Flint’s superb ball retention enabled Parry to notch a second try.
