Centre to train workers for major build projects

-

GRŵP Llandrillo Menai has announced plans to develop a world-class infrastructure skills training centre at Coleg Menai’s Llangefni campus.

Consultation on the proposed Centre for Infrastructure Skills (CIST) opens this week.

The centre will be located at the northern end of the Llangefni Campus and the objective is to create a training centre of excellence for North Wales which will deliver many of the skills requirements associated with the construction stages of major infrastructure projects planned for the region.

The proposed scheme is supported by Welsh Government funding and the first phase will include a state-of-the-art Scaffolding Training Centre along with facilities for General Construction Operatives and other more specialised skills.

Dr Ian Rees, Executive Director of Regeneration and External Affairs at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, said: “Significant developments planned for North West Wales will bring major construction site opportunities and a once-in-ageneration economic opportu- nity for the region. It is a key part of our strategy at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai to support employer skills needs in a growing North Wales economy by providing education and training opportunities where they are needed.

“The new facilities at Coleg Menai in Llangefni will provide opportunities for local people with no technical or vocational skills, people who may want to re-train and people who are unemployed or perhaps unhappy in low skill zero-hours type employment, to gain skills that are in high demand both locally and nationally.”

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai aims to submit a planning application for the scheme to Anglesey County Council in early June following a period of public consultation running from May 1 until June 1.

Dr Ian Rees explained: “We will be meeting with local stakeholders over the coming weeks to hear their feedback on our pro- posals and will be holding a public consultation event at the Energy Centre on the Llangefni Campus on Saturday, May 12 2018.

“We believe CIST will make a real, tangible difference to the local economy by providing exciting prospects for our local people.

“We would urge everyone to come along to the event to learn more about our plans and the opportunities they will bring.”
