Citizens success as derby goes to wire

BANGOR City and Llanfairpw­ll featured in a derby clash to savour in the North Wales Coast Bowls League’s Division A, the Citizens eventually prevailing 7-5.

City secured a 6-4 lead in the games, only for the teams’ aggregates to be perfectly balanced at 166-166 points, after a re-count.

Bangor’s best card came from Kevin Bebington at 21-5, against Llanfairpw­ll’s Gavin Davies with 21-3.

City, who had trailed 1-3 in games and were minus 29 points after the first set of four, hauled back into contention so that ultimately the match outcome hinged on the very last match up, with Gwerydd Buckland beating Geraint Williams 21-17.

Beaumaris A lost 8-4 at Colwyn Bay Legion 8-4.

Division B results: Benllech 9 (Dennis Taylor 21-8) Conwy B 3; Bethesda 5 (Ioan Critchlow 21-7, Brynmor Jones 21-7, Derek Roberts 21-9) Llandudno A 7 (160-164).

Division C: Beaumaris B 5 Abergele 7 (174-178): Holyhead 9 (Dave Rossington 21-3, Dan Rossington 21-8, Bob Cuthbertso­n 21-8) Vardre Deganwy A 3.

Team captain Adam Harris led by example with a 21-2 solo success when Beaumaris defeated visitors Abergele 7-3 in the Welsh Counties League.

Llanfairpw­ll are still waiting to break their duck, losing for the third time – and second at home – to Broughton by an 8-2 score, with Gwilym Roberts on 21-18 as their best, although three team-mates just lost 20-21.

Llanfairpw­ll went down 8-2 again in a rearranged match 48 hours later at Llanrwst.

Llanfairpw­ll are emerging as earlyseaso­n challenger­s to reigning champions Llangefni in the Anglesey/Bangor and District League’s Monday Division, boasting four straight wins and a slightly better points total.

The villagers’ latest triumph was by the maximum 10-0 margin against Menai Bridge, Arfon Jones leading on 21-7.

Llangefni, also winners four times, had a 6-4 close call at Criccieth, where the games were split at 4-4 and the 2017 title kings snatched the bonus because of the 131-130 points’ aggregates.

Beaumaris A, the Wednesday Division title kings last season in the Anglesey/ Bangor and District League, were brought down to earth with a bump in an 8-2 beating at Llanfairpw­ll.

The dominant hosts featured Geraint Booth as a 21-5 winner, Beaumaris’ best return from Arfon Jones at 21-9.

Other results: Beaumaris B 6 (Dave Mathias and Geraint Owen both 21-3) Holyhead 4 (Ian Black and Dan Rossington both 21-6), Bethesda 7 Criccieth 3.

Benllech came from behind to grab a 5-4 win at Dinas Criccieth in the Gwynedd Seniors’ League’s Division A, after having trailed 3-4 in the games.

The Anglesey seasiders pocketed the bonus to clinch overall victory because of the 112-107 aggregates, influenced by Alan Kynaston’s 21-6, Gwyn Owen on 21-8 and Owain P Williams 21-9.
