Cool Bro in fight for cup final spot

-

BRO Goronwy will have a second knockout final in their sights tonight (Wednesday) when they visit Gwalchmai in the semis of the Meditel Gwynedd Cup (6.30pm).

Already into the Bob Owen Memorial Shield Final, where they meet Nefyn United at Caernarfon Town on Friday, May 18, Bro enter this evening’s clash at Maes Meurig in great form having hammered Bontnewydd 6-0 in a league encounter at Cae Nerys last Saturday.

That result means Goronwy are the only team that can now realistically prevent Holyhead Town lifting the Gwynedd League title, depending on the decision over Talysarn Celts cancelling their game against the Harbourmen last Saturday.

Bro strengthened their grip on runners-up spot by caning fellow highflyers Bont out of sight.

The hosts pounced after 13 minutes to take the lead, Jac Thomas quick off the mark to gain possession, rounding the keeper and slotting home the opener.

Before the home crowd could settle back down Taylor Jones gave them more reason to cheer as he doubled the lead less than a minute later, looping a 25 yard shot past the helpless stopper.

Simon Kay could have given Bontnewydd hope but could not find the target as Bro pushed to put the match to bed. Jac Thomas was terrorising the defence, helping to create further chances.

A quick break so nearly produced a third, Callum Thomas crossing but Dan Fairhead just unable to stretch enough to poke home.

Minutes before the break Bro did reap their rewards, hesitance in the Bont back-line the key as a long ball resulted in Connor Jones following up an effort to neatly finish into the net. Just before the interval Chris Byast’s free kick from the halfway line was struck well but should have been dealt with comfortably only for the glovesman to spill into the net for 4-0.

Gareth Edwards summed up the visitors’ afternoon as he turned well in the box but failed to find the target and Morgan and Guto Roberts were unable to keep their headers below the crossbar.

With 20 minutes remaining Bro made it 5-0. Good combination play resulted in Callum Thomas’ far post cross picking out Jac Thomas, whose header was well met by a well-controlled Pat Roberts volley.

Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes nearly fell to the same goalkeeper’s curse, spilling an easy take, but the difference being he produced a mighty point blank save to keep up his clean sheet appearance bonus.

Jac Thomas gained his second of the match, starting and finishing the afternoon’s goal-scoring with only minutes left to play.
