Bro finish season in fine style

- FOOTBALL

BRO GORONWY ended their 2017-18 Gwynedd League campaign with a convincing 4-1 win at Menai Bridge Tigers, which ensured they finished just a single point behind champions Holyhead Town.

Chris Byast stung Bridge goalkeeper Dafydd Evans’s fingertips in the opening exchanges as well as sending an early shot wide of the target.

Liam Griffiths was inches away from giving the visitors the lead before Andy Wannop nearly put away one of Menai’s scarce chances, lively on to the dropdown inside the six-yard box but denied by a point-blank Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes save.

Tam Morton gave a non-stop battling man-of-the-match performance and went close twice in the first half.

Menai’s resistance finally unfolded as Byast struck minutes after the restart.

Cutting in from the left, he sent his rising shot flying into the top corner of the net.

Soon after, Bro doubled their lead.

Gareth Owen launched a ball under the crossbar, only for midfielder Dave Roberts to divert into his own net.

Bro’s pace on the run so nearly made it 3-0, Connor Jones flying upfield to release Dan Fairhead only to be crowded out, but Andy Williams still managed to get his strike away, Evans saving with his feet.

Bridge were creators of their own downfall to concede again after 67 minutes, mistakenly giving the ball away for Morton to score from the tightest of angles.

Dave Roberts made up for his mishap when pulling a goal back, this time converting with a looping header into the correct net from Wannop’s free-kick.

Bro hit back with Jac Thomas continuing his recent good form. Andy Williams’s perfect cross allowed the youngster to nod home to seal an excellent 4-1 away win.

Thomas ends the season second top-scorer for the team on 21 goals, having netted a remarkable 15 in seven appearances during May.

Bro finish the campaign undefeated on the road in the league with a record of nine wins and two draws.
