Double the happiness for tremendous Town

- FOOTBALL

HOLYHEAD TOWN completed a memorable double as they scooped the Meditel Gwynedd Cup last Friday with a 3-1 victory over Bro Goronwy at Llangefni.

Already crowned Gwynedd League champions at the first attempt, Holyhead faced a Bro outfit which had lifted the Bob Owen Memorial Shield the previous weekend.

Town took the lead after only seven minutes, Nick Williams upending Tom Hadley’s pacy run to leave Asa Thomas to slot low past Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes from the spot for his 45th goal of the memorable season.

It was all one-way traffic as Holyhead seemed to be the only team on the pitch.

Sion Davies found the side-netting with a shot but was soon to make it 2-0 after only 23 minutes. The winger looped in a cross that deceived Sweeter-Hawkes to drop into the net for his 26th goal of the campaign.

Holyhead were starting to tie the ribbons on the cup after they made it 3-0 with barely half an hour on the clock. More shambolic defending by the Moelfre men left Ryan Lees a free header from six yards out to give Town a dream start.

That was the signal for changes from the bench and in formation as Bro looked to restore some pride.

Jac Thomas gave a glimmer of hope moments before the break as he sniffed out his chance, reaching the ball ahead of glovesman Rob Bentley before chipping into the empty net.

The second half was a case of Holyhead not doing anything silly to let Bro back into the match. Lee Potter’s side looked more lively but could not find enough to reduce the scoreline. Thomas and Jordie Murphy went close on the break for the Harbourmen before Bro’s Liam Griffiths could not quite get enough contact to find a way past the goalkeeper.

Goronwy applied more pressure but nothing would drop their way, Connor Jones whipping a ball across the face of goal but no-one was there to finish it off.

Town goal-machine Thomas uncharacteristically blazed over the crossbar when all in the clear late on.

Some handbags close to the final whistle saw Bro’s Chris Byast and the Harbourmen’s Chris Dewitt shown red cards before Holyhead Town lifted the Meditel Cup.

This latest success made it five trophies in two seasons for Holyhead under Craig Brodie, the Gwynedd League and Anglesey League titles both secured as well as the Gwynedd Cup, Megan Cup and Lucas Oil Cup.
