Jinx-busting Tigers earn their stripes and secure Anglesey League

- FOOTBALL

MYNYDD TIGERS broke a jinx and landed the Kon-X Anglesey League title at the expense of Bryngwran Bulls last Saturday.

After losing five successive times to the Bulls this season, Tigers finally got it right by winning a championship decider at Bangor City’s Nantporth stadium 4-2.

Five previous meetings between the pair this term, one in the league, two cup ties and two finals, had all gone the way of Bryngwran.

Bulls needed just a point to add the league title to the Lucas Oil and Dargie Cups already in the trophy cabinet, while Mynydd had to win to claim the crown. And it was Tigers who delivered, taking a 3-0 lead via Tom Eames, Mike Holroyd and Herbie Hofsteede, before Bryngwran hit back through James Ryan’s 53rd goal of the season and a Barry Edwards strike to reduce the deficit to one. But Hofsteede struck again to seal Mynydd’s deserved victory on the day and a top position they hope will lead to promotion to the Gwynedd League.

Tigers manager Mark Hughes said: “It’s been a long season, lots of ups and downs but, when it mattered, we produced the goods.

“At 3-0 I thought it was game over but credit to Bulls, they showed character to push us to the end.

“At one point I thought our numerous missed chances would come back to haunt us but thankfully we got over the line.

“We’ve played 10 16 or 17-year-old lads this season, which bodes well for the future in, hopefully, the Gwynedd League.”

As for Bryngwran, they still have a chance to complete a hat-trick of knockout competition victories this Friday when they take on Caergybi in the Megan Cup final, kick-off 6.30pm at Maes Eilian, Llanfairpwll.
