Bangor battle to seize draw from jaws of defeat

BANGOR CITY mounted a storming finish to achieve a thrilling 6-6 draw with Conwy A on their own green and continue a four-match unbeaten run in the North Wales Coast Bowling League’s Division A.

City trailed 1-6 in games, but showed resilience in the closing phase to claw back to 4-6 and snatched the bonus by just four points.

John Short produced a stunning 21-7 show for the hosts.

Llanfairpw­ll were overjoyed at pulling off their first away victory of the season, when they hammered Denbigh A 8-4 on their own green, Dylan Williams 21-9.

Beaumaris A were hammered 10-2 at Penmaenmaw­r A, captain Keith Bailey best at 21-9.

Rhos Park B 11 Benllech 1; St Asaph A 8 Bethesda 4 (Ioan Critchlow 21-4).

Beaumaris and Llanfairpw­ll slumped on the road again in the Welsh Counties League – at Llanrwst by 7-3 and at Min-yDon, 8-2, respective­ly.

Bangor City’s Gary Buckland is the new sin- gles champion the Anglesey/Bangor and District League, following his brother Gwerydd’s triumphs in both 2017 and 2016.

In the final at the Rachub green, Gary Buckland beat Llanfairpw­ll’s Geraint Booth 21-14.

In the Gwynedd Cup semi-finals, Llanrwst beat Blaenau Ffestiniog by just seven points, but the of Bethesda-versus-Llanfairpw­ll contest was called off by mutual agreement between the clubs and is rearranged for Thursday, July 19, so causing the final to be delayed – until possibly July 26.

Highest placed Beaumaris A, now down to fourth, lost 6-3 at Llanrwst, where only the pairs did well, Arfon Jones and Dave Mathias winning 21-8.

Llanfairpw­ll A endured an identical 6-3 at Dinas Criccieth, although Dennis Taylor posted 21-7 and Glyn Roberts 21-8, while Benllech also lost 6-3 at Llandudno B.

Beaumaris B flopped 8-2 against Criccieth.

Gwynedd finished second-best at home and away against Wrexham in their latest North Wales Inter-League Championsh­ip clash.

The overall statistics from the action at the Benllech and Gresford’s Garden Village greens had the locals in arrears by an 18-8 score line, after trailing 8-16 in games and 386-431 points.

In the home half, Gwynedd incurred deficits of 3-9 games and 195-226 points, with Alan Dugdale on 21-3 as the outstandin­g solo player.

Gwynedd fared slightly better away, with the games at 5-7 and points 191-205, as Steve Parry made it 21-8, but they paid for being a team member short and surrendere­d at 0-21.
