Meeting on future of Column

-

IDEAS on how to restore and reopen an Anglesey landmark will be discussed at a public meeting today.

The Marquess of Anglesey’s Column in Llanfairpwll, closed to the public since 2012, is the subject of the event at Plas Newydd organised by the Anglesey Column Trust.

Having launched a campaign to restore the 200-year-old Grade II* listed column last November, the Trust is working on a business case on how exactly it will achieve its aim.

Alex Paget, 8th Marquess of Anglesey and chair of the Trust Committee, said: “A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes and we have been successful in attracting grants to help the development phase.

“This has enabled us to appoint a consultancy specialising in heritage, regeneration and economic development projects to help prepare a Round 1 application for the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“In 2016, our Anglesey Column Trust Committee commissioned a structural engineers report, which concluded the column is structurally sound but requires significant work to restore the central staircase.

“However, the site also consists of a cottage, woodland and car park, providing a wealth of opportunities to make an interesting, accessible attraction for all members of the community, and we want to know what our local community thinks.”

The public drop-in event is at Plas Newydd today, 5.30pm to 8pm. See angleseycolumn.com
