Surprises as top two miss out

BIG shocks in Division One of the Pant Du Winery Gwynedd and Anglesey Summer Netball League last Wednesday saw leading pair Pwllheli and Arfon Ladies both lose.

Pwllheli were beaten 26-20 by Dyffryn Ladies, who led 6-3 after the opening quarter, 12-9 at half-time and 20-16 entering the last before stretching away in the final session.

Player-of-the-match for Dyffryn was Cadi Jones, with Cerys Studt voted best for Pwllheli.

Arfon went down 23-20 to third-place Primos. Again, the winners were in front all the way – 8-4, 12-8, 17-14 and then 23-20. PoM: Primos – Claire ColesWilli­ams; Arfon – Alaw Ceris.

Tim o Walis and Holyhead battled out a thrilling 27-27 draw.

It was 5-5 after the opener, 13-13 at midway, Walis edged ahead 21-19 going into the curtainclo­ser, but Holyhead rallied to claim a share of the spoils. PoM: Walis – Elen Edwards; Holyhead – Coadie Roberts.

Pwllheli lead the table by two points, but Arfon have a game in hand.

In a crunch clash between the top two in Division Two, leaders Dolgellau were defeated 18-16 by Arfon Celts.

Both teams are now on 49 points from 11 matches apiece. Celts were always just in front, 6-4, 10-9 and 15-12 at the completion of the first three quarters. PoM: Celts – Kate Pritchard; Dolgellau – Sara James.

Dreigiau Brynrefs edged a corker against Porthmadog 23-22.

Port were 10-9 in front at half-time, but Brynrefs were 19-15 to the good ahead of the last, which the Llyn side won 7-4, but it was not quite enough to earn them a draw. PoM: Brynrefs – Elin Thomas; Porthmadog – Catrin Williams.

To complete a fantastic week of close contests, the Pwllheli derby saw the Wildcats overcome the Subway Warriors 25-22. Bottom side Wildcats led 6-5 and 12-10, but the Warriors turned the tables to be 18-16 ahead at the end of the third. However, the Wildcats showed their claws and won the last 9-4 to seal a stunning triumph. PoM: Wildcats – Charley Davies; Warriors – Erin Aled.
