Second N-plant park and ride plan unveiled

-

PLANS for a second park and ride facility for nuclear workers have been unveiled.

Last month, Anglesey council submitted plans for a 102-vehicle facility near the Four Crosses pub in Menai Bridge, which would be used by workers helping to build and operate the proposed Wylfa Newydd nuclear plant.

Now, Gwynedd council has submitted separate planning proposals for additional park and share land which includes enough spaces to accommodate 178 cars.

The facility at Parc Bryn Cegin near Bangor, which would also include provision for disabled users and charging points for electric cars, has been designed to alleviate pressure on pinch points such as the approach to the Britannia Bridge towards Anglesey, with workers being bussed in for the remainder of the journey to the site of the planned plant near Cemaes.

The parking site, on the outskirts of Llandegai, enjoys access from the A5 and stands a kilometre from junction 11 of the A55 and two kilometres from Bangor City Centre.

Earlier proposals to build a park and ride facility for nuclear workers at Llanwnda near Caernarfon were shelved in March following local opposition.

Locals had argued it would create problems with rubbish and noise and would attract vandals, cause house prices to fall and have a detrimental effect on bat population in nearby woodland.

An environmental assessment, commissioned by Gwynedd Council officers, found factors which made the site unsuitable and officials concluded it would be best to shelve the plans.

The new plan would not impact on sites within Parc Bryn Cegin which are already earmarked for commercial development.

It was announced in December 2015 that Liberty Properties Developments Ltd had been selected by the Welsh Government to create a 400-job leisure scheme at the entrance to the park.
