BETHESDA’S annual open pairs’ bowls competition is on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend (August 26), with a 10.30am start.

Entry fees are £10 per pair and £5 for under-18s juniors, with the organiser being Dilwyn Owen on 01248 600074.

Preparations are going ahead for the Tom Towart Perpetual Trophy open singles’ competition, hosted by the Benllech club on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27. Mike Ward is the organiser on 01248 853921, the entry fee is £5 and play begins at 10.30am.

Beaumaris A trounced visitors Conwy 8-1 to move to within four points of leaders Craig-y-Don A in the Gwynedd Seniors League’s Division A title chase.

The emphatic win featured single-figure entries from Arfon Jones and Dave Mathias 21-3 in the pairs and David T Evans 21-5 in the singles.

Llanfairpwll A slipped up 7-2 at home to Criccieth, while Benllech suffered the same fate when they hosted Llandudno A.

Division A’s other results: Dinas Criccieth 4 Llanrwst 5, Llandudno B 2 Craig-y-Don A 7.

Division B: Craig-yDon B 7 Llanfairfechan A 2, Craig-y-Don C 7 Peibio 2, Dwygyfylchi A 2 Caernarfon 7, Porthaethwy 2 Dwygyfylchi B 7.

Winners of all three matches so far, buoyant Mon-Menai are on the brink of clinching the Federation of Bowls Associations’ Championship Division 6A title and promotion.

The locals will cross the finishing line if they add last-match opponents Preston to their list of conquests on Sunday, August 19.

Division leaders Mon-Menai against joint second-placed Preston will be a home-and-away clash between 12-a-side teams, with the greens being Bethesda and the Fox Lane club in Leyland. If the locals achieve what is expected of them, they will progress to the Federation’s Champion of Champions’ showdown at Halifax on September 13, when the eight group winners will turn out teams of eight in a one-day knockout on two greens.
