Nerves of steel see ‘new boys’ Llangefni to victory

-

NEWLY-PROMOTED Llangefni seconds made a fine start to life in WRU Division Three North with a 45-26 triumph over Shotton at Cae Smyrna.

Llangefni played expansive rugby and defended stoutly, especially against an effective threat from the Steelmen.

A decisive spell before and after half time sealed the victory for Llangefni, but Shotton wasted some good overlap chances.

Tries for the hosts came from Dylan Williams, Cai Oliver (2), Osian Dafydd Jones, Andrew MacNima- nee and Arwel Roberts, the latter kicking three penalties and three conversions.

Menai Bridge were defeated 28-27 in an entertaining opener at Dinbych seconds. The hosts struck first with a converted try before Bridge bounced back with a touchdown for prop Tino Williams.

Dinbych took control with a pair of tries, but the gap narrowed as Bridge captain Dion McGrath went over for a converted score before the break.

Menai started the second half well, with a try for débutante flanker Nick Stevenson. Dinbych retook the lead with a penalty, but Bridge scrum-half Gareth Parry crossed for a converted try to make it 24-20 to the visitors.

The hosts scored a further try, McGrath kicked three points for the islanders, but a late penalty sealed it for Dinbych.
