Pacy Casey cracks double for Hotspur

-

HOLYHEAD Hotspur Reserves struck a big blow for the Anglesey League when they knocked Glantraeth out of the NWCFA Junior Cup with a 2-1 victory at the New Stadium last Saturday.

It was a great achievement for Mike Kelly’s young side against vastly experienced opponents from the higher level Gwynedd League.

Hotspur started brightly with the winds at their backs, looking to get the ball down and move the Glantraeth midfield at every opportunity.

Chances were at a premium but Haydn Williams had the best opening of the half for Holyhead, being put through clean on goal but failing to get a good connection on his shot.

In the second half Glantraeth, with the wind now behind them, used their long throws to good effect and caused a few nervy moments in the Hotspur area.

The game was mainly contested in the midfield but Hotspur were always dominant with the ball.

The breakthrough did not arrive until five minutes from time, when home player-manager Kelly skipped past two defenders into the box and squared for Casey Gregg to slot home.

Two minutes later great work on the left from Tom Scott released Gregg to tap in for his second.

A handball in stoppage time from Hotspur gave Glantraeth the opportunity to reduce the deficit.

Andy Clarke coolly stepped up and dispatched the penalty, but that was the end of the scoring.

Scott Hughes was a six-goal hero in Arriva Bangor’s 7-1 Lucas Oil Anglesey League victory at Bodorgan.

Mark Williams added a single for the visitors, Luke Gardiner on target for the hosts.

Marcus Bell and Justin Williams bagged a brace apiece in Caergybi’s 5-1 success at Llanfairpwll. James Ryan added another for the visitors, Tom Graves with the sole home netfinder. Craig Moore was in typical deadly form with a hat-trick in Bryngwran Bulls’ 3-0 beating of Cemaes Bay in round two of the Lucas Oil Dargie Cup.

In the Lucas Oil Cup, Cefni triumphed 3-1 at Llandegfan, Nathan Lewis and Liam Griffiths (2) sharing the away tally, Justin Williams replying. Pentraeth Reserves pipped CPD Y Fali 3-2 in extra time. Kenny Williams (2) and William Jones were the Pen marksmen, Barry Haigh and Mike Williams keeping Valley in it.
