Purple haze to light up the Menai Strait
BANGOR Rotary Club’s project to light up the Menai Strait purple, from Monday, October 22, to Friday October 26, to publicise Rotary International’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign is fast approaching!
More supporters are becoming involved every day – and opportunities for the general public to also get involved are now welcomed too!
A range of key buildings, including Caernarfon Castle, Bangor Cathedral, the Bangor University Arts Building and Beaumaris Castle will be illuminated purple throughout the week. Pontio will join in the event, turning vivid purple on Wednesday, October 24 – which is World Polio Day – with a giant informative display being projected onto the walls!
Many businesses and private homes along the Strait are increasingly coming on board and have agreed to shine purple lights to show support for the eradication of this devastating disease. Everyone is invited to join in this unique local event and light their own purple lights (bulbs are available on Amazon and eBay).
Even small lamps will add to the impact of purple light either side of the Strait – or even further afield! These will add to the many thousands of purple lights that will be lit all around the world. Please join in the fun and share the important message of how close we are in ridding the world of this dire illness, which particularly affects children.
Information sites, staffed by Rotarians, will also be in place at Pontio on the 24th and at Bangor Cathedral, Caernarfon Castle and Beaumaris Castle throughout the week. You can also donate towards thevital immunisation programme – each pound will mean five children can receive life-saving serum. Donations can be made at the information sites but also by texting BRPP18 followed by £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070” ( JustTextGiving by Vodafone)
Other fund-raising ideas are welcomed too! Our Lady’s RC Primary School in Bangor have already planned a No-uniform Day, with proceeds donated by to help protect children in the three remaining countries where the disease is endemic (Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria).
The Gazelle Hotel on the Strait are also joining in and has had a practise run to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Every idea to publicise the event – and all donations – will be greatly appreciated. Also, why not consider joining your local Rotary Club and get really involved in worthwhile projects, make new friends and have fun? Find out how at the information sites or below.
