Bro Goronwy pushed all the way by Cefni before prevailing in cup

-

BRO GORONWY needed a 90th minute clincher to finally see off Anglesey League underdogs Cefni FC 4-2 and progress to the second round of the NWCFA Junior Cup.

The visitors started the tie the better, Hugh Jones and Lee Lewis both going close with fine strikes.

Gwynedd League Bro then asserted some authority and took the lead on eight minutes when a free-kick swung in from the right flank left Jac Thomas all alone to nod past Danny Taylor for the opener.

Thomas doubled the lead on 35 minutes, again planting his header past the stricken goalkeeper from a corner.

Before the break, Dan Fairhead timed his run to perfection to dissect the away defence and latch onto a perfectly-weighted pass, calmly taking the ball in his stride and squaring for Callum Thomas to side-foot home for a 3-0 lead at the interval.

The next goal was always going to be key in either putting this tie to bed or giving Peter Twigg’s visiting warriors the spark to believe in a mighty comeback.

And the visiting supporters regained their voices as Paul Jones planted his header past Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes for 3-1.

Keeper Taylor’s heroics kept Cefni in the mix before Ben Wright brought the scoreline to within a single goal with still 20 minutes remaining in this pulsating cup-tie with a clinical volley.

Cefni pushed all they could but could not force a leveller, and, in the final minute, Ross Mark made it 4-2.
