Players face big trial ahead of island Games

-

SOME of Anglesey’s finest football talent will be on show tonight (Wednesday) at a trial game in preparation for a huge event being staged on the island next year.

The 2019 Inter Games Football Tournament will be hosted by Ynys Môn for the first time next summer and men’s team manager, Campbell Harrison, is looking to build the strongest squad possible to compete.

With this in mind, Harrison has announced two squads for a trial match taking place at Holyhead Hotspur’s ground this evening (7.30pm kick-off ).

The players involved will be aiming to make the manager’s provisional squad, which will get together for the first time in the new year.

Including hopefuls from clubs in Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy, the group competing tonight range from Welsh Premier League, Huws Gray Alliance, Welsh Alliance and Gwynedd League regulars.

Referee Carl Hagan will lead the officiating team.

Holyhead Hotspur, Holyhead Town, Llangefni Town, Bodedern Athletic, Gwalchmai, Amlwch Town, Caernarfon Town, Conwy Borough, Llandudno and Porthmadog will all be represented, with the two squads separated into Team Ynys and Team Môn.

Players from more of the island’s clubs are set to be included in future trial fixtures.

Harrison said ahead of the game: “This is another big step forward in terms of our preparations for next summer’s tournament, and it is hugely exciting to have a game like this where we’re bringing so many of the island’s talents together to showcase the standard of footballers Ynys Môn has produced.

“We’ve got almost 40 players coming together from a host of clubs across the Welsh footballing pyramid and we’re very lucky to be able to select from such a strong group of players.

“What has become clear in planning this fixture, is that we’ll certainly have to arrange another in future, because there is so much talent out there that I want to take as many opportunities as possible to bring as many players as I can into the fold to give them a chance to stake their claim to be involved in what will be a brilliant tournament, and one we’re aiming to win.

“We’re very thankful to Holyhead Hotspur for granting us full use of their facilities, and to Holyhead Round Table who will be providing catering on the night.Entry is free for what is sure to be a very exciting game; we want to get as many people as possible involved and bring the island together behind our many fantastic talents.”
