2021 START FOR THIRD BRIDGE

That’s Welsh Govt aim as they pledge ‘sensitive’ choice of Strait crossing

- Eryl Crump

WORK to construct a third bridge across the Menai Strait will start in three years time. First Minister Carwyn Jones visited Anglesey this month and revealed the purple option as the preferred route for the proposed crossing.

The purple option would use a new bridge constructed to the east of the existing Britannia Bridge.

Additional facilities for pedestrians and cyclists will be included as part of the scheme.

Mr Jones said an appraisal revealed the purple option provided the highest economic benefits and best value for money. It was also the most popular option during the public consultation, with 25% of respondents selecting it as their first choice.

He said as part of the next stage a procurement exercise will take place to appoint technical advisors to design the bridge and to draw up draft traffic orders and an environmental statement.

“The A55 is important locally, nationally and internationally.

“It provides the main economic artery to North Wales and connects the region with the rest of Wales, the UK and Europe.

“The Britannia Bridge is the only section of the route which is single carriageway and we know this reduction in lanes leads to congestion at peak times and during the tourist seasons.

“There is a very strong case for increasing capacity cross the Menai Strait and I am delighted the Welsh Government is taking action to address the issue.”

Transport secretary Ken Skates added: “We have made it known for a long time of our intention to build a third Menai crossing and this announcement is a significant step forward in delivering exactly that.”

Mr Skates added he “fully understands” the sensitivity of placing a new crossing over the Menai Strait and further analysis work will take place before the bridge type is selected.
