Bro keep their eyes on the prize in shield clash

-

DESPITE not being at the races throughout, Bro Goronwy achieved a 3-1 win over Llanystumdwy to advance to the semifinals of the Tarian Goffa Bob Owen Memorial Shield.

Manager Lee Potter will no doubt be satisfied at the result, even though the performance was not the best.

A first half to forget failed to create much excitement, Bro’s closest effort bouncing back off the crossbar from a penalty-box header.

The tie woke up after the interval with goals at the start and, crucially, the end to swing the tie in favour of the islanders.

Bro struck the first blow, Callum Thomas dancing past two defenders on the left before squeezing the ball home from the tightest of angles.

Llanystumdwy were soon level when Sean Pierce’s 25-yard free kick arrowed low into the corner of the net.

At this stage, cup progression could have gone either way, Connor Jones’ low-angled drive was so nearly converted at the far post to give Thomas his second, but the away side were delivering some dangerous moments across goal themselves.

Tom Wood found his scrambled chance crowded out and Andy Williams’ touch failed him on the run, but class is permanent as the striker did not have to be asked twice after 83 minutes.

Latching on to a loose ball, Williams netted to make it 2-1.

Connor Jones put the cherry on the cake in the dying minutes with the highlight of the match.

Connecting on the full, his volley had it all, dip and power, before dropping into the top corner of the net.

Gwynedd League leaders Menai Bridge Tigers made it eight straight wins by beating Talysarn Celts 4-2.

Darren Gowans, Dafydd Healy, Kelvin Frazer and Dean Redmond, with his 15th goal of the season, struck for the visitors.

Glantraeth triumphed 3-1 at Nefyn United, Dion Williams, Andy Clarke and an own goal make up the away tally.
