Hotspur draw a blank but do make a point

- Football: Huws Gray Alliance

HOLYHEAD HOTSPUR travel to Denbigh Town this Friday still bottom of the Huws Gray Alliance, despite picking up a commendable point from a goalless draw at Penrhyncoch last weekend, reports Gareth Davies.

With Denbigh lying third from the basement, Hotspur’s visit to Central Park will have the feel of a real six-pointer.

Darren Garmey’s side perhaps could – and should – have come home with all three points from Cae Baker last Saturday afternoon.

Garmey’s men have shown in their 100% cup record in two competitions so far this season that they are a far better outfit than the league table shows at present, but they need to put some wins together as only one HGA victory so far needs to be improved on.

They are quite capable, but should have taken maximum reward from their long trip to Ceredigion.

Hotspur started at a quick tempo and, on seven minutes, a corner by Dean Garmey on the right was headed just over by Mel McGinness.

The visitors were taking control of the midfield and, on 12 minutes, a 20-yard free kick by Marc Evans struck the post as Hotspur continued to hold sway.

However, at the other end, a long-distance punt by Pen’s Liam Lewis just skimmed the post.

Just after half-time, a fine ball by Cory Jones was played to Dan McGinness but the effort came to nothing.

Hotspur continued to look the more likely to break the stalemate and, on 50 minutes, a corner by Dean Garmey was glanced just wide of the target.

A two-footed dangerous tackle on Garmey by Luke Sherbon brought a yellow card instead of a red by the lenient referee.

Hotspur continued to dominate play, especially the midfield, and should have been in front, although the home side showed an ability to break quickly, but the travellers produced some resolute defending.

With seven minutes to go, Pen striker Steffan Davies was given a straight red after manhandling Carl Jones.

Just after, Alex Jones produced some superb defending to avert a dangerous situation.

Before the end, Tomos Clarke with an overhead kick and a Dan McGinness curler went close but the deadlock was not broken and it had to be just a point to take home – but not for the want of trying.
