PITCH LEFT IN A RUT
Club hits out after damage during grass cutting leaves ground unplayable:
ACOUNCIL- OWNED football pitch looked like it had been ploughed by a tractor after contractors were deployed to cut the grass.
Caergybi FC’s ground, at the Morawelon estate in Holyhead, Anglesey, ended up more like a farmer’s field than the San Siro and was left unplayable.
The contractors, hired by Anglesey Council, carried out the work earlier in the week during heavy downpours and left the pitch a patchwork of mud-filled ruts.
Caergybi FC manager Dale Moffat was far from impressed. He told the Daily Post: “It’s disgraceful what they’ve done.
“Why on earth would they continue to carry on working when they saw the damage their equipment was causing?
“The pitch is ruined and it’ll take a while before we play on it again.”
He added the team were fortunate they didn’t have a home game scheduled this weekend. “We’re at Valley in a cup match this weekend and our next home match is against Holyhead Hotspurs next weekend.
“The lads at Holyhead Town have offered us the use of their pitch at Millbank so the match will be played there because there’s no way we can use our pitch.”
The club is only in its second season but are flying high in the Anglesey League and are still involved in four cup competitions.
“We’re having a good season, second with two matches in hand and still in four cup competitions out of five. We could have done without this distraction,” added Dale.
Fans were quick to voice their feelings on social media. Ken Gray, writing on the club’s Facebook page, said: “Sure there’s a local company that would take pride in doing a better job and with the right equipment.”
And Tom Scott added: “Brilliant gesture by Holyhead Town. Awful mess made and those responsible should be held accountable.”
Anglesey Council have been approached for comment.
