Bro strike back late to secure last-four place

-

BRO GORONWY returned to winning ways with a 3-2 victory at Talysarn Celts in the quarter-finals of the Meditel Cwpan Gwynedd.

The islanders had visited the same ground on the first weekend of the season and came away with a 3-0 win on that occasion.

New imminent team manager Martin Jones was present and immediately made an impact after rallying the troops beforehand and putting the lads through their paces alongside Lee Potter.

Bro were fast out of the traps and almost took the lead after five minutes, a goalbound shot by Jamie Ryan Jones being blocked. Tom Wood and Liam Griffiths then linked-up to release Andy Williams who was unlucky not to net.

The first Goronwy goal came on 28 minutes after Ross Mark won a free-kick which Jamie Ryan Jones whipped in and the clinical Andy Williams put the travellers ahead.

It was all Bro in the first half as they tried to get a second goal and credit must go to the hosts who defended superbly with their goalkeeper pulling off a number of brilliant saves.

With Dylan Jones coming on for Jamie Jones on 60 minutes, the Celts were tightening the screw and but for a superb save by Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes they would have netted an equaliser.

Talysarn did get their leveller on 68 minutes when Jac Jones scored via a superb free-kick leaving SweetserHawkes without a chance of keeping the ball out of the net.

Shortly after, Celts took the lead after yet another superbly-executed finish, this time Thomas Usher doing the damage for the home side.

This prompted changes from the visitors as Connor Jones came on for Ross Mark and Jac Thomas for Liam Griffiths. Picture: Paul Scholes

Connor Jones immediately made waves. Brother Taylor won a free-kick which Connor struck right into the top corner, Rob Tiesteel making sure to poke the ball in. Although dubious, many had seen the ball already cross the line from the free-kick.

It was to be Connor Jones again who won the tie for the visitors after Taylor Jones and Tom Wood linked-up well.

The goalkeeper parried away Taylor Jones’s shot for Connor Jones to follow in. Bro saw out the final few minutes as referee Dewi Morris blew for full-time leaving the villagers to celebrate another semi-final slot.
