Win or two draws needed for Bethesda

North Wales Women’s League Div 2

BETHESDA Athletic are two points away from winning the North Wales Women’s League Division Two title after coming from behind to beat Mountain Rangers 4-1 last Sunday.

Just one win or two draws from their final four league matches will now guarantee the Parc Meurig side are crowned champions at the first attempt.

Sunday’s result made it eight straight victories in a row in Division Two for the greens and blacks.

It was far from easy for Pesda, though. A much-improved Mountain Rangers, who had lost 12-1 at home to the same opposition earlier in the season, made life tough for their hosts.

Rangers took a deserved lead through Siwan Williams and Athletic’s defence coped well under further heavy pressure, stand-in keeper Angharad Evans also doing a fine job between the posts.

Later in the first half Bethesda made it 1-1 when Chloe Hughes latched on to a through-ball by Katie Midwinter and showed great agility to slalom through defenders and equalise.

Rangers pressed hard before the break and could easily have been in front at half time, but it remained all-square at the interval.

Pesda upped their game in the second half and edged in front when a pass to the right flank found Ffion Roberts who finished exquisitely, volleying the ball into the back of the net.

Having not played in a number of weeks, Bethesda lacked a little match sharpness, but this returned steadily as the match went on.

They went 3-1 up when Roberts was free on the right and set up Shannon Jones for a cool finish.

A good pass from Hughes then found Midwinter on the edge of the box. Pesda’s top-scorer took a touch and buried the ball into the bottom left corner for her 19th goal of the campaign.

That secured a fine win for Pesda, but they knew they had been in a game against a much more formidable Mountain Rangers outfit than they had faced last November.

Bethesda are due to visit Rhyl Development in the Division Two League Cup this Sunday. Pesda have beaten the coast side three times already this season in all competitions. Mountain Rangers visit Amlwch Town, also in the league cup.
