More economic woe for Anglesey as 30 jobs under threat at hauliers

-

ANGLESEY has been hit with another economic blow after it was announced a national haulier is consulting on closing down its island depot –with 30 jobs under threat.

NR Evans is considering shutting its site on the industrial estate at Mona as part of a reorganisation by parent company NFT, which could also see a depot at Cross Hands in South Wales close.

This has seen 24 drivers and six office staff on Anglesey told their jobs are at risk – with a consultation launched on the closure move.

The news follows a torrid month for the island with Hitachi announcing Wylfa Newydd is being put on hold.

It was followed by plastics firm Rehau revealing it was closing its site at Amlwch after more than 40 years – with more than 100 jobs at risk.

Slaters is also closing its Vauxhall dealership at Llangefni while Barclays and Santander have announced branches are shutting at Holyhead and Llangefni respectively.

One NR Evans worker said they had been told the site is at risk – with meetings held with staff at the site.

He said: “They are looking at getting rid of the two Welsh depots. It is a consultation at the moment but these things never end well.

“It is a bad time for Anglesey at the moment and a bad time to be losing your job.”

A spokesman for NFT said: “We are reviewing the activity undertaken by the Anglesey and Cross Hands depots, and considering relocating that volume to other depots in the wider NFT network.

“Should this go ahead, there is a possibility that those depots may close and our aim would be to relocate colleagues where possible.”

The NFT group bought NR Evans back in 2016 in a deal worth £20m.
