A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK...

LEGO Movie sequel builds on the brilliant first outing and delivers an awesome experience

- BY CHRISTOPHER HUNNEYSETT

YOUR favourite LEGO heroes are back in this gleefully inventive and sublimely silly actionpacked animated adventure sequel. Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks return to lead the original cast and a wealth of starry cameos, including Jason “Aquaman” Momoa and Bruce Willis, in another attempt to save the world of construction from destruction.

Starting just after the end of the first movie, when the peaceful LEGO town of Brickburg is about to be invaded by DUPLO aliens, we skip forward five years to find our heroes, Emmet and Wyldstyle, are reduced to living in an apocalyptic wasteland. When Wyldstyle, Batman and other friends are kidnapped and taken to another dimension, loyal Emmet goes off to rescue them.

Once again, the story plays out in the LEGO world and our human one, with each intruding and impacting on the other, in a surprisingly emotional manner.

Played at a breathless pace in a riotous anarchic style, the outrageous volume of gags means some member of the family will always be laughing at something.

Even when a character vomits rainbow glitter, the moment manages to be cute and funny.

There are more women involved such as Tiffany Haddish as Queen Watevra, and some insanely catchy songs, but the big difference between this and the first movie is in our expectations.

Back in 2014 we wondered how a film built on toy bricks could possibly be worth watching, only to find ourselves blown away by how downright awesome it was.

Now our skyscraper-high expectations demand the same genius level of fun, which this completely delivers, brick by brilliant brick.

It’s a dizzying, kaleidoscopic rush and almost too much to process in one sitting, and I’m looking forward to taking my eight-year-old as soon as I get the chance.

I grinned myself stupid through this bricktacular success, and I’m sure you will, too.
