GCSE STARS
Plenty to celebrate for pupils:
A12-YEAR-OLD who got the equivalent of two A* grades in Russian and Italian was among the success stories as pupils in Gwynedd picked up their GCSE results.
Despite being in Year 7, Oliver Norman gained the qualifications at Ysgol y Moelwyn in Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Headteacher
Dewi Lake praised pupils and staff at the school for the GCSE results.
“Developing independent skills is essential in order to ensure a successful career,” he said.
“The process of gaining these qualifications clearly exemplifies the level of these skills.
“Many thanks to the school staff for their hard and diligent work, for their support for pupils and for being so willing to tread the second mile.
“Many thanks to the pupils
for your special contribution to the school and the local community during the last five years. “Congratulations to all on your success.
“I wish you all the best in the future.” Education chiefs praised results across the county as scores of youngsters found out their fate following months of hard work by both staff and pupils.
At Ysgol Friars in Bangor, there was special praise for one pupil who only joined the register last September. Loredana David joined the school after moving from Romania and, despite having only limited English and no Welsh when she arrived in Wales, she achieved an A grade in English and a B in Welsh.
“We’re really pleased with our performance again this year, with a continuing rise in performance against a number of key national indicators,” said headteacher Neil Foden.
At Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen in Caernarfon, 98% of pupils achieved the equivalent of five A* – G grades or higher, with 66% of pupils achieving the equivalent of five A* – C grades or higher.
As a result, more pupils than ever achieved the equivalent of five A*/A grades or higher.
“It is wonderful to celebrate with great pride the achievements of numerous pupils who have worked very hard over the last two years,” said acting headteacher Rhian Parry Jones.
“We look forward to welcoming back a large number of our successful year 11 pupils to study towards Higher Level qualifications in the sixth form with us.
“I would like to congratulate everyone on their successes and to thank all the pupils, staff, governors and parents at the school for all their efforts and consistent hard work and support yet again this year.”
Cllr Cemlyn Rees Williams, Gwynedd Council’s cabinet member for education said: “These results are very good; the pupils are to be warmly congratulated.
“We want to see every pupil succeeding.
“I would like to thank the teachers for their hard work throughout the year.”
Congratulating the pupils on their success, Garem Jackson, Gwynedd’s head of education, added: “GCSE results are very good this year and reflect the commitment of our young people.
“Many congratulations to them for their hard work and success.
“These good results reflect the emphasis placed in our schools on inclusion, equal opportunity and the success of pupils as individuals.”
Mr Jackson referred to the performance in some individual subjects, going on to say: “The results are good in a number of subjects but especially in the following subjects: Welsh Language, Science, Design and Technology and History.
“It is also pleasing to note that many of our young people have been very successful in vocational subjects.”
