Stretch of A55 closed after trailer disengages

Sea zoo attraction taking steps to slash plastic waste

-

TOURISM attraction Anglesey Sea Zoo wants to lead the way in turning the tide on plastic pollution.

The island business has been donated a new plastics granulator from a leader in recycling equipment, Summit Systems.

They are also advising the business on the best course of action to take with regards to capturing and collecting waste plastic on and around Anglesey.

Dan Jordan, materials manager at Summit, said: “It’s my mission to make sure that the UK recycles more plastic packaging.

“This saves the huge transport costs of shipping materials for recycling abroad, and also makes the recycled material available to processors in the UK.”

The granulation unit will size reduce redundant waste plastic into flakes, allowing the material to enter the recycling system for reuse rather than landfill or incineration and Anglesey Sea Zoo will be putting it into action over the summer. Company bosses have also drawn up new plans to phase-out single use plastics.

Frankie Hobro, owner and director of Anglesey Sea Zoo, said: “Anglesey Sea Zoo has continued to push environmental boundaries by introducing sustainable initiatives that will change our own habits and those of others. We have been leading community beach cleans for 12 years, helping to raise awareness of the increasing problem of plastics, so the next step is to take action on the use of the plastics. We have a pivotal role in investing in our environmental values within our business model and as such we are currently implementing changes to completely drop all single use plastics on site, something which we have already started to action on a significant scale. We hope our visitors and other businesses will follow our example.” A STRETCH of the A55 had to be shut after a trailer came loose from a vehicle and crashed into the central barrier.

Police closed the eastbound carriageway at Llangefni after the trailer – which was transporting a minibus – detached from the vehicle carrying it and crashed into the central reservation.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 12.37pm to reports of a crash on the A55.

“A trailer detached from a vehicle and the eastbound carriageway was closed.”

The vehicle being towed by the trailer appeared to have been damaged by the collision.

The road had to be closed while the vehicles were recovered.
