TWO North Wales men took home big money on Sunday’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Retired teacher Davyth Fear, from Caernarfon, went home with £500,000, while Sean Lea, from Wrexham, took home £32,000 on the episode – fronted by Jeremy Clarkson.
Mr Fear, a former head of geography at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, Anglesey, was just one question away from the top prize on the ITV show.
He ended up taking the money after stumbling on the final question, which asked which of four celebrities were born in the same year as The Queen.
Mr Fear, who also taught at Ysgol Eifionydd, Porthmadog, and Ysgol Ardudwy, Harlech, still had a phone a friend lifeline to use, but his pal could not help, so he decided to leave with the money. Before that, he had overcome questions on mountains, Al Capone and art.
Clarkson made a number of quips about Mr Fear’s love of Welsh, including stating he had spent too much time learning the language when he stumbled on a question about films.
In another segment of the show, when Mr Fear spoke about his work giving all the world’s birds names in Welsh, Clarkson asked whether it entailed “taking the vowels out of the English words”.
Following Mr Fear’s stellar performance, Wrexham’s Sean Lea won the fastest finger first segment and was the second person to appear before Clarkson on the evening’s show.
After a solid start swatting away questions on the Royal Navy, hats and cyclist Mark Cavendish, he got into trouble when he had already reached £32,000.
A question about which fashion house Clare Waight Keller became first female artistic director of left him stumped. After using all of his lifelines without success, he decided to take the money.

Lois Jones, 18, is the first female learner to do a bilingual Foundation Apprenticeship in Agriculture through Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s Glynllifon Campus at Llandwrog.
The programme is funded by the Welsh Government with support from the European Social Fund.
She is halfway through her course and is living the dream on a dairy farm close to her home in the village of Llanfachraeth, Anglesey, run by Ceredig Evans and his wife Sara who have a herd of 300 Holstein Friesian dairy cattle.
Lois (below) said: “I knew when I left school that I would like to have a go at working on a farm.
“I have found that I love working with the calves and doing the early milking shift.
“I decided to do a bilingual apprenticeship because it was easier for me to discuss things in Welsh, which is my first language and then write in English.”
She reckons her and brother Iolo get their love of farming from their grandfather Arthur.
