‘DEVIOUS’ PERVERT, 36, JAILED FOR FIVE YEARS

A MAN who admitted charges of sexual activity with a teenage girl has been locked up.

Gavin Wayne Campbell, 36, of Brynsiencyn, Anglesey, had admitted three charges of sexual activity with the girl at an earlier hearing.

He also admitted charges of assaulting a police officer and another man, as well as possessing cannabis and threatening to damage property, and was at Caernarfon Crown Court for sentence.

Judge Huw Rees told Campbell (pictured): “You took advantage of her in a devious, persistent and pernicious manner, displaying guile and deceit in equal measure.”

The judge said Campbell had sent the teenager text messages and given her cannabis, which had created a “false sense of security” and was “obvious grooming activity”.

He told Campbell he would serve at least two thirds of the custodial sentence and that it would be up to the Parole Board to decide when he would be released from prison.

The court heard the matters came to light after text messages sent to the teenager were seen by a family member.

Following his arrest, Campbell made admissions in interview and was bailed.

While under investigation, he tried to contact the teenager and he was abusive and violent towards a man who had tried to intervene.

During a subsequent police interview, Campbell was said to have lost his temper and spat at a police officer.

Defence counsel Elen Owen acknowledged that Campbell faced a significant prison sentence.

“There is no justification or excusing his behaviour,” she said.

Pointing out that he had no previous convictions for any sexual offences, she asked the court to impose the least possible sentence in the circumstances.

Campbell was locked up for five years and nine months, and had his prison licence period extended by four years.

In addition to the prison term, he must not approach the teenager or her family indefinitely.

He was also made the subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register.
