Lifetime of landscapes
HER long-standing and deeprooted affection for North Wales, developed out of years of holidays and family visits, which is apparent in Anne Aspinall’s new collection of landscape paintings, now exhibiting at the award-winning Ffin y Parc Gallery.
Born in 1949, Anne trained at Manchester College of Art & Design and although now residing in Macclesfield, she paints almost exclusively in North Wales, especially around Porthmadog and its harbour, always outdoors and in situ.
To help celebrate her 70th Birthday, a major solo show called ‘A Welsh Connection’ has been put together depicting her journey as an artist, celebrating her talent and insight.
There is also a limited edition book available to accompany the exhibition.
Anne describes herself as a colourist and often jokes about how she can suffer for her art.
“For some of my paintings I’ve been caught in storms, winds and rain,” she explained.
Gallery owner Ralph Sanders added: “Her subject is the coastline and domestic landscapes of North Wales which she has been watching and painting all her life.
“She clearly has an observant and inquisitive eye; the houses in her paintings, often seen from a distance are like gossiping neighbours, inviting us in…
“The affection that Anne feels for her subjects is clear and the work has a generosity and warmth that is extremely welcoming.”
Also exhibiting at Ffin y Parc until Wednesday, December 4, is glass artist Kate Pasvol, with her first solo show entitled ‘Welsh Walks’.
Also an architect and teacher, Kate works on her sculptures in her studio in North London and at the University of Hertfordshire.
In her work, Kate is looking for ways to represent and capture the landscape,” explained Ralph.
“Her work involves a range of glass techniques including fusing and casting, with recent works made up of single and multiple glass blocks containing layered three dimensional images that reflect the Welsh landscapes from memories of her own walks in Wales.”
Kate added: “I am trying to recreate the feeling of travelling through a landscape by forming 3D images that appear to move and change as you pass them.”
