Citizens claim narrow win over Llanfair

-

BANGOR City are now up to eighth in Cymru North following a narrow 1-0 home victory over Llanfair United.

The Citizens overcame the basement dwellers with minimal fuss despite missing countless chances against a side who went down to 10 men in the second period, and Pedro Pasculli’s side would be aiming to extend their recent turnaround in form when they entertained Conwy Borough last night, Tuesday.

A positive start from the home side saw them go close on two occasions through Nicolas Delvecchio and Massimo Sammartino, and Patrick Agyemang’s header narrowly missed the target with 19 on the clock.

Francesco Serafino was denied a clear chance thanks to a superb last-ditch tackle on 23 minutes, and City spurned another opening when Delvecchio fluffed his lines from close range towards the end of the first period.

After the break saw the home side pick up where they left off with dominant possession, but Serafino was unable to steer in an Agyemang delivery when through on goal with 49 gone.

City received another massive boost on 51 minutes when Gethin Jones was sent off for a second bookable offence in disputable fashion, with manager Rhys Stephens also sent to the stands. The hosts immediately took advantage of their numerical superiority to open the scoring on 63 minutes through skipper Pavel Vieira, who managed to hit the target from close range for what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Although Pasculli’s men were wasteful in the final third for the remainder of the contest in which the Llanfair goalkeeper made a string of fine saves, they saw out the remainder of the clash in comfortable fashion to secure their sixth win in 15 league games so far this term.

The Citizens’ clash against Conwy Borough was an opportunity for Pasculli’s side to show their progress against a team who are just above them in the Cymru North.

Despite a rough patch where the Citizens went just over a month without winning a game, they appeared to have turned a corner and will be looking to push on and climb the table further during the second half of the season.

Bangor are without a game next weekend and are back in Cymru North action when they travel to Buckley Town on Saturday, December 21, kick-off at 2.30pm.
