Rapist jailed for attack on woman as she slept:

42-YR-OLD ‘PREDATOR’ SEXUALLY ASSAULTED ANOTHER VICTIM IN A SEPARATE INCIDENT

- Eryl Crump

A PREDATOR who raped a woman while she slept and sexually assaulted another has been jailed.

Ian Keith Burton, 42, carried out the two attacks in the Bangor area in April and May 2017.

A jury at Caernarfon Crown Court heard he had drunk alcohol and took drugs before he raped a woman.

Another charge related to Burton intentionally touching a woman when she did not consent.

She had told him in forceful terms to leave her alone, the court heard.

Burton, of Ffordd Carneddi, Bethesda, had claimed the sexual activity with both women was consensual.

But Judge Timothy Petts noted the jury had rejected these claims and had found him guilty.

Jailing him for a total of seven and a half years, the judge said: “Clearly you are a sexual predator and you acted in a disgusting manner.”

Burton was cleared by the jury of a third charge of sexual assault.

In addition to the jail term, the judge ordered Burton not to contact either woman by any means until further notice.

Burton’s details will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Prosecutor Mark Connor said both women, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had spoken of the effect Burton’s offending had had on them.

In a victim personal statement, one said she feared what he had done would affect her for the rest of her life.

Defence counsel Elen Owen said character references submitted to the jury and to the court since the trial spoke highly of Burton.

She said the offences dated back nearly three years and there had been no similar behaviour before or since.
