Park and share plan to ease congestion at A55 pinch point
£600,000 SCHEME NEAR SCIENCE PARK ALSO AIMS TO CURB ‘FLY PARKING’
WORK is set to start on an A55 park and ride facility aimed at tackling congestion and ‘fly-parking’
Anglesey County Council has commissioned Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK to build the £600,000 construction project at Gaerwen on Anglesey that is due to be completed in June 2020.
The scheme, funded through Welsh Government Local Transport Fund, will comprise a new park and share car park adjacent to junction 7 of the eastbound carriageway, near the £20m Menai Science Park.
It is designed to encourage road users and commuters to use these new facilities to park their vehicles and travel in a shared vehicle to their destination.
This reduces congestion and improves journey times on pinch points like Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait.
The council also says it is better for the environment and will combat parking in undesirable locations, known as ‘fly parking’.
Anglesey Council’s Highways Property and Waste portfolio holder Cllr Bob Parry said: “The park and share facility in Sant Tysilio has proven to be very successful and we are pleased that Welsh Government have funded this project which will further encourage people to share lifts. It can also be used as a convenient coach pick up/drop off.
“The park and share site will feature around 100 spaces.”
Transport and North Wales minister Ken Skates said: “It’s great to see the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund supporting this scheme, which will deliver benefits to the public and the environment. Lift-sharing can help reduce congestion and improve journey times.”
Mike Davies, Jones Bros contracts manager, added: “We’re really excited to be working on this project to help improve connectivity and reduce congestion around Anglesey while also combatting fly parking.
“As a North Wales-based firm, we understand the importance of projects like this to communities in the region and expect a smooth programme of works in the months ahead with a team of up to 15 on site.”
Traffic management will be in place along the A5152 to Gaerwen during construction near the site entrance.
