Students at Bangor being ‘harassed over coronavirus fears’
UNIVERSITY HAS A ‘ZERO TOLERANCE’ APPROACH TO SUCH BEHAVIOUR
BANGOR University has addressed reports that Asian students have experienced harassment since the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The university said individuals and groups have reportedly been harassed and avoided amid the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, but said it had a “zero tolerance” approach to such behaviour.
The virus, which originated in Wuhan in China, has caused concern around the world and led to some misinformation.
Bangor University has announced a travel ban following government advice, and warned staff and students not to travel to China following the outbreak.
However, it said it was unaware of any staff or students who had visited the Wuhan area in the last few weeks.
The spread of the virus is said to have fuelled hostility towards Chinese communities across the UK.
Mark Barrow, president of the student union at Bangor University, said: “Following reports both locally and nationally of some individuals or groups being avoided or harassed in relation to the Coronavirus Covid-19, we would like to reiterate that both Undeb Bangor and the university has a zero tolerance to any reports of behaviour likely to cause harassment or intimidation.
“This is totally unacceptable, and we strongly condemn anyone engaging in this type of behaviour. We will continue to work with the university and the local community to ensure that no student experiences any form of harassment or intimidation.
“We are always here to support our student body and anyone with concerns can report them to us.
“Incidents of abuse or intimidation may also be reported to the police.”
A spokesperson for the university added: “The university has been providing reassurance, advice, and support at what is a difficult time for many in the Asian community, particularly those who may be concerned about friends and family in the region.
“Any behaviour which involves harassment of any individual is unacceptable, and we would encourage everyone to support each other during this difficult period.”
Students can report any concerns regarding the matter on 01248 388000 or undeb@bangor. com.
