Music technology students make the competition finals
AGROUP of Music Technology students from Coleg Llandrillo face a nervous wait after performing at the national final of the Skills Competition Wales’ Popular Music Performance contest.
The talented group of seven, who make up the band Seven Waves, battled it out with the three other bands from across the whole of Wales, which qualified through a series of highly-competitive heats.
The finalists now have to wait until March before the results are released.
The final took place at the Atrium, University of South Wales, Cardiff.
The musical brief comprised selecting, rehearsing and performing a short set of three songs as a band of two or more members.
The songs could be cover versions, original compositions, or a combination of both.
This was not a songwriting competition so no additional marks were awarded for composing.
The members of the Rhos-onSea-based band are: Harmony Flynn from Towyn, Ioan Ruggiero (Abergele), Catherine Fenner (Conwy), and Michal Gorecki, Julia Kaminska, Krystian Kozinski and Noah Spree, who are all from Llandudno.
The other bands in the final were Bootsnake from Merthyr Tydfil College, Sonic Riot from Coleg Y Cymoedd and The Realm, who represented Cardiff and Vale College.
The Coleg Llandrillo band members are a mix of BTEC Level 3 Music Technology and UAL Music Production and Performance students.
They are a pop/rock group with an indie rock/power pop crossover appeal. All of their songs are original compositions.
Their tutor James Taylor added: “Three of the members are from Poland, who moved to Llandudno to study Music Technology here at Coleg Llandrillo.
They are currently working on material for our annual Music Technology album which will be released near Easter. They are hoping for further iTunes chart success after one of their songs was featured on the college album Pink Noise, which was released last year.”
Nia Rhys Jones, planning and development manager at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, said: “Congratulations to all the members of the band on winning the internal heat and putting up such a strong performance at the national finals. We all have our fingers crossed on the final outcome.”
Skills Competition Wales consists of a series of local skills competitions, aligned to WorldSkills competitions and the needs of the Welsh economy, funded by the Welsh Government and run by a dedicated network of colleges, work-based learning providers and employer-led organisations.
