One-star hygiene score hit our business hard

INDIAN RESTAURANT BACK TO FIVE STARS AFTER RATING SHOCK

- Amelia Shaw

APOOR hygiene rating affected an Anglesey restaurant so badly that waiting staff had their hours cut as a result.

The Taste of India in Menai Bridge lost its five star rating following a visit by food safety officials from Anglesey Council in November.

But after a recent re-inspection it has regained its five star hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency.

The restaurant’s relieved owner Sadrul Hussain admitted the one star rating that was handed out in November “seriously affected” the business.

Mr Hussain said: “After the one star rating our business definitely went down hill. We have always been a five star since the Food Hygiene Standards ratings started.

“We were so shocked when we got a one, we knew there were a few things and we thought maybe a three but when we saw it was one we couldn’t believe it.

“We paid for a re-rating and we were given a five two weeks ago. There were definitely less people coming after the rating in December. We had to cut the hours of some of the waiting staff because we just weren’t busy enough.

“Hopefully the new five star rating will help boost business again.”

Earlier this month the business was revisited and Anglesey Council food hygiene inspectors were satisfied that the issues raised in November had been resolved.

Ratings are a snapshot of the standards of food hygiene found at the time of inspection which includes handling of food, how food is stored, how food is prepared, cleanliness of facilities and how food safety is managed.

The food hygiene rating scheme does not provide information on the quality of the food served, customer service, culinary skills, presentation or comfort of the establishment.

The ratings go from zero to five – zero means that “urgent improvement” is necessary, and five shows that the business is seen as “very good”.
